Zamora is a province in the Castille and León region, in the western side of Spain. It is an area of lakes, rivers and peaceful nature. Due to its location, the province has many castles, fortresses, temples which witnessed many wars and battles. The Holy Weeks processions are a very important part of its culture and traditions. The area is famous for its wine region, Toro, which produces powerful red wines made from the grape variety Trempranillo and the Zamorano cheese, a sheep’s milk cheese rubbed with olive oil.
The town of Zamora, capital of the Zamora province is a good place to start. It is a charming ancient city with Romanesque churches (12th century), a cathedral and a castle, with beautiful views of the city. The Romanesque cathedral took only 23 years to build and it is filled with light. It is one of the oldest church in the region. At the back of the cathedral, you will find the Casa Del Cid or Casa de Arias Gonzalo. El Cid was a nobleman and military leader, and a national hero in Castille. After visiting the half dozen Romanesque churches (with free entries), you can head to the Roman bridge that crosses the river, where you can take the best pictures as you get a full view of the old town. There are many tapas restaurants where you can mix with the zamoranos. The city has a reputation of being very welcoming and friendly. The Abastos Market is a place to go for foodies. It is a typical market from the early twentieth century. It has a structure in metallic iron, a red brick facade, and curved windows. You will get to see (and taste) the best fresh products in the region.
Parque Natural Lago de Sanabria is a Natural Park situated in the northwestern part of the Zamora’s province. It has a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and trees. It is a great location to spend the day with your family, you can swim, or hire a canoe. The Culebra mountain range is home to the largest population of wolves in Europe. You can also head to the Toro wine region along the Duero River. It is a little known wine, made from the bold Tinto de Toro (Tempranillo) grape. The Toro’s area has some great restaurant and about 40 wineries to choose from. There are many other places, such as the Mirador de Barracas, or the medieval village of Fermoselle and the typical Campillo village with its visigothic church, San Pedro de la Nave, a national monument.
