Spain is known to be one of the best places in the world to kitesurf or windsurf. The destination is very popular thanks to its beautiful beaches, warmer climate (and waters), its nightlife and many other activities on site, including touring its traditional cities, discovering its wine and gastronomy. There are also numerous kitesurfing/windsurfing schools where you can either learn the sport or improve on your skills.

Here are a few destinations to consider when booking your next Spanish Kitesurfing or windsurfing holiday.

 Winsurfing/Kitesurfing spot: Denia

Location: costa Blanca (Eastern Spain)

Denia is a great destination to go to with your family or friends, especially if you want them to keep busy while you are windsurfing or kitesurfing.  There is a spot for windsurfing or kitesurfing  called La Chimenea in Vergel,  located on the beach of Santa Ana.  During the summer, the sea breezes are stronger than in winter. This 5 km long beach experiences 2 different thermal winds during the summer : the Garbi and the Lleibeg. It is the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spot in this area of Spain.

The area has also wide sandy beaches and rocky caves. There are numerous activities on offer such as fishing, paddling, snorkeling, or whale and dolphin spotting. Most of the beaches have blue flags, lifeguards and disabled access. They also have typical cafes and restaurants so you can enjoy the Mediterranean cuisine with a great sea view. There are more than 300 restaurants serving tasty dishes made from fresh produces of the sea, and one of the specialty to try is the Dénia red prawn. When travelling to Dénia, stay at the Bungalows Los Llanos. They offer all the comfort and are in a great location to visit the famous Cova Tallada (carved cave), a cliff side cave, or the towns of Benidorm, Javea, Altea…

Winsurfing/Kitesurfing spot: Tarifa and Caños de Meca

Location: Andalucia (South of Spain)

The province of Cádiz has 138 km of beaches and Tarifa is a popular destination for windsurfers and kite surfers. Check out the beach of Playa Arte Vida, surrounded by pinewoods, it has plenty of parking spaces, barbecue facilities, bars, toilets and restaurants nearby. Or Playa Hurricane, which is more suited for windsurfers due to the stones on the beach. It is a good beach for sunbathing as the cliffs protect sunbathers from the wind. But if you are looking to get a couple of sundowners after a session, then head to the Playa Valdevaqueros. It has some great bars and restaurants.

Caños de Meca is the name of a less known windsurf spot, located on the Costa de la Luz. Caños de Meca is well known for its outside reef that generates great waves. If you prefer the sea to be a bit calmer, then you can go to the other side of the bay, which is protected.

The Bungalows Caños de Meca are the ideal kitesurf or windsurf accommodation. The site has 50 bungalows and will be a good option if you are travelling with a group. It has a restaurant on site and barbecue facilities. It is also a great spot for a family holiday with numerous activities on site such as a kids’ park, bike rental and more.

Winsurfing/Kitesurfing spot: Somo Beach

Location: Cantabria (Northern Spain)

Somo Beach is another great location and it involves less travelling as it is located in Northern Spain. The site is popular with windsurfers, kite surfers and surfers. You will find a surf school on the beach and it is well-equipped with showers, parking and a lifeguard. The site is very scenic with great views of Santander and a lighthouse on Mauro Island. The village next to the beach has some very nice ceramic workshops that are worth a detour. When travelling to Somo Beach, you can stay at the bungalows Los Molinos de Bareyo. They are perfect especially if you are travelling with your family. They will find plenty to be entertained with the swimming pools, sports facilities (tennis, basketball and football courts), and playgrounds. There is a complimentary shuttle service to the beaches.

Winsurfing/Kitesurfing spot: Sant Pere Pescador

Location: Catalonia (North East)

Sant Pere Pescador is known to be one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean. The village beaches with their sandy dunes are a hot spot for windsurfers and kite surfers alike. The World Windsurf Championship takes place there in June. There are 2 dedicated kite surf areas Cortal de la Devesca and Can Martinet. They have great facilities with free practice zones, toilets and bars.
