Minorca or Menorca is a boomerang shaped island, and the second largest of the Balearic Islands archipelago. It is better preserved than its more famous sisters Ibiza and Majorca. This is mainly due to the fact that its inhabitants are eager to protect the island from some of the devastating effect of mass tourism. The island has been an UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1993 and 40% of Menorca is now protected. The island is ideal for a beach and nature holiday with its endless beaches, rocky coves and turquoise watered bays known as calas. The two main towns are Mahon (Maó) and Ciutadella (Citadel). Mahon is the second biggest natural harbour in the Mediterranean. It is a very laidback town and its architecture is a testimony of the British occupation during the 18th century. Ciutadella on the other side of the island, is a small fortified city, with a Muslim heritage. The small streets give the impression of a never ending labyrinth, filled with shops, cafés with sunny terraces and small markets.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria – an oasis of peace in the heart of the city
The cathedral was built in the 13th century when Alfonso III claimed the island back from the Muslims. The cathedral has many styles due to many restorations, from the Catalan Gothic style, 13th century to the neoclassical façade from the 19th century. There is a small museum inside, showing the history of the cathedral. The ticket will also give access to the cloister gardens. The cathedral inside has many historic paintings, beautiful stained glass windows and impressive gargoyles. It is the perfect place to visit during the siesta and when the shops are closed. There are leaflets in different languages, explaining the history of the monument.
The harbour in Ciutadella – picturesque harbour filled with restaurants
The harbour has many moored yachts, fishing boats and very good restaurants where you can mix with the locals. There is a market on Fridays and Saturdays, where you can buy souvenirs. It is also a great place to go out at night with many bars and discotheques. It is very trendy and some of the shops do open until late, some of them until midnight.
Cala Turqueta in Ciutadella – one of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca
The bay is well preserved with fine sand and turquoise water. It is the ideal beach for families, the waters are shallow and you can see the fish swimming in the water, also perfect to go snorkeling. There is a 15 minutes’ walk from the car park to the beach, and it is very popular with the locals.
Cami de Cavalls in Mahon – a piece of heaven for walkers
The Cami de Cavalls is a 186 km coastal path, which was built to connect the watchtowers, fortresses, and to make the movement of the troops and artillery a lot easier on the island. It is also known as the GR223, with 20 different stages, from 5 km to 14 km. The GR can be reached from the main roads, allowing walkers to choose which stage they want to walk. The views along the GR are stunning and some of the paths will give you access to secluded and tranquil beaches.
The Favaritx Lighthouse in Mahon – a lighthouse and a beautiful coastline
The lighthouse is outside the city of Mahon and is worth the visit, with stunning views of the coastline. It was built in 1922 after a few shipwrecks and accidents along the coast. The lighthouse is not open to the public. There are some paths for walkers and horse riders. The grey rocks and the lava rock formations around the lighthouse will give you the feeling to be on another planet. The site is very popular with painters and photographers. There are no tourist shops and facilities around so you have to come well-prepared.
La Mola de Menorca in Mahon – a fortress with beautiful sea views and great history
La Mola de Menorca is a huge fortress with impressive ramparts, which was built to protect the island from wars and invasions. Its completion went through different stages, the later one was when the fortress was armed, and some of the guns can still be seen during the visit.
