Gandia is a seaside resort on the Costa Del Azahar. It is accessible from the airports of Valencia (65km away) and Alicante (96km away). There are good rail connections too from the rest of Europe. The seaside resort has always been popular with Madrilenians. This is due to its pristine beach, rich history, nightlife and good quality restaurants. Gandia can be divided in two, the Gandia Playa (beach resort) and Gandia city (a mix of modern buildings and old architecture). Gandia is also set within the orange growing region of Spain, producing each year delicious oranges.

Suggestions to make the most of your holiday in Gandia, near Valencia

The old city of Gandia

Gandia is located between the sea and the mountains, with a rich history. It has been very popular with poets and writers, the most famous one being Joanot Martorell (1413 – 1468). Joanot Martorell was a Valencian knight who wrote the Tirant lo Blanch novel. The novel was made into a movie in 2006. The novel is about the adventures of a knight during the Byzantine Empire and Cervantes, the creator of Don Quixote, praised it as the best chivalry novel. Passeig de Les Germanies is a beautiful promenade with trees, benches and fountains, very popular with the elderly locals. The Ducal Palace dates back from the 14th century and was the residence of the Royal Dukes of Gandia and the Borja Family. It was the birthplace of San Francisco de Borja, a cardinal who plotted against Pope Julius II. The palace has a private chapel and is lavishly decorated. The Collegiate Basilica of Santa Maria of Gandia or “La Seu”, is one of the main tourist attraction. It was originally an Arab mosque, converted into a church in 1499. The sanctuary is gothic but the rest of the church is baroque. If you are looking to do a spot of shopping before returning to your accommodation, then head to Calle Major where all the shops are, alongside cafes and restaurants. When dining out, try the Fideua, which is a traditional paella dish made using noodles instead of rice. There is a popular Saturday market worth spending a couple of hours.

Gandia beach

The beach is pristine and it is a blue flag beach with great facilities. There is a promenade, which is a great destination for a stroll on a balmy evening. There are many beach volley courts and with the beach being so wide, it never feels crowded. There is a watersport centre where you can hire the right equipment to go windsurfing and kite-surfing. The popular beaches of Denia, Javea and Calpe are nearby and can be accessed by boat.

Days out in the countryside

Gandia is very close to the mountains, an ideal ground for hiking and horse-riding through the vineyards and orange groves. This will be a nice change of scenery or perfect for some energy burning activities before spending the day at the beach. If you happen to be in Gandia during the winter, then the ski stations of Javalambre and Valdelinares are only a couple of hours away.
